Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and MP Ravi Karunanayake has accused the government of acting inconsistently amid the ongoing coal import controversy.
Expressing his views on what he described as a questionable coal deal, the MP said the government must immediately stop “playing a double-edged sword.”
He claimed that the current administration portrays its actions as being carried out in good faith, yet shifts the blame onto state officials when issues arise.
In contrast, he noted that when members of the present government were in opposition, they accused previous administrations of corruption even over minor matters.
The MP further stated that there are clear problems in the coal import process. Drawing on his experience as a former Finance Minister, he said he had previously engaged with state officials on coal procurement and implemented a new procedure to ensure greater transparency and accountability.
