Government Promises Salary Hike for State Employees in 2025 Budget

Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Anil Jayantha Fernando, has assured a salary increase for government sector employees, including teachers, starting next year.

Speaking to the media, Fernando stated that the details of the salary increments would be outlined in the 2025 budget proposals. He emphasized that the decision was driven by the need to address economic hardships faced by the public rather than for political gain.

“The current salaries are insufficient given the significant hardships people are enduring. A salary increase is an urgent necessity,” Fernando remarked.

Acknowledging the economic challenges inherited from the previous administration, Fernando underscored the government’s responsibility to act decisively. “We cannot simply ask people to tighten their belts and wait until 2026. That’s not the approach we are taking,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to easing financial pressures on state employees.

He concluded by encouraging public confidence in the forthcoming salary adjustments, calling it a “definite step” to support the workforce amid the ongoing economic crisis.
