Government Ready to Face No-Confidence Motion Against PM and Education Minister on January 22–23

January 14, 2026

The government has expressed its readiness to debate the no-confidence motion to be moved by opposition Members of Parliament against Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in Parliament on January 22 and 23, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

He made these remarks while addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing held today (13) to announce Cabinet decisions.

Dr. Jayatissa said the proposed debate would provide an important opportunity to clarify numerous facts related to the education reforms implemented so far, as well as the government’s future plans in the sector.

He added that the government expects the opposition to proceed without delay in formally tabling the no-confidence motion.

Accordingly, January 22 and 23 have already been allocated for the debate, and the government is prepared to provide additional days if necessary, the Minister said.

He further emphasized that once the opposition brings forward the no-confidence motion, the debate would allow the government to clearly present the facts and realities of the education reforms to both Parliament and the public.
