The government has decided to set a guaranteed price for rice, with the Ministry of Agriculture confirming that the official price will be announced next week.
A special committee, chaired by the Director General of the Agriculture Technology Division, is currently working on determining the guaranteed price.
To support farmers and ensure fair market practices, the government plans to procure 300,000 metric tons of paddy from the ongoing harvest through the marketing board. The Ministry of Agriculture has already requested the necessary funds for this initiative from the Treasury.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Namal Karunaratne, elaborated on the government’s strategy for purchasing paddy, emphasizing its commitment to stabilizing the agricultural sector and securing farmers’ livelihoods.
