Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, highlighted that Sri Lanka received 784 million US dollars from overseas workers last month.
Speaking in Parliament, the MP noted that when these funds are deposited in local banks, overseas workers receive an interest rate of only 4% to 5%.
However, due to the government’s heavy debt burden, the country is paying interest rates of 10% to 11%, a disparity that Karunanayake described as deeply unfair.
“It is regrettable that those who contribute significantly to building the nation—our overseas workers—are paid such low interest,” he said.
The MP called for an increase in the interest rates offered to overseas Sri Lankan workers as a recognition of their vital contribution to the country’s economy.
