Sunil Kumara Gamage says Sri Lanka is currently holding discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) on the possibility of placing the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket under an interim committee or an empowered official.
The Sports Minister stated that the government is pursuing the matter with urgency and confirmed that Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directly intervened in the discussions.
Government Plan to Develop Cricket
Minister Gamage noted that the government has already completed several phases of a broader plan aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s cricket structure and securing future success in the sport.
He emphasized that the government will continue implementing the programme and will not step away from its responsibility to develop the game.
According to the minister, the discussions with the ICC form part of this larger initiative, as the government is determined to improve cricket administration without risking a suspension from international cricket.
New Administrative Structure Planned
Gamage stated that authorities are currently preparing the structure of a new administrative framework for Sri Lanka Cricket.
“We will implement the appropriate action. This is done for the purpose of uplifting the sport, and the President is also keenly involved in this,” he said.
He added that the government’s priority is to ensure the continued progress of Sri Lanka’s cricket while maintaining its uninterrupted participation in international competitions.
