Govt May Consider Changes to Sri Lanka Cricket Ahead of May Day, Says Marikkar

April 23, 2026

S. M. Marikkar of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has claimed that the government is considering changes to the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket in an effort to gain public support ahead of May Day.

Marikkar made the remarks in response to media reports suggesting that the President may dissolve the current cricket administration and appoint an interim board of directors before May 1.

He further alleged that the SJB is preparing to hold what it describes as the country’s largest rally ahead of May Day, and claimed the government is concerned about participation levels in rival rallies.

According to Marikkar, the SJB will limit its May Day activities to a rally, noting that a Poya holiday falls on the same day, and therefore no parades or additional celebrations will be organised.

Responding to speculation that a new interim board could be led by former SJB MP Eran Wickramaratne, Marikkar said he had seen the reports but there was no confirmed information. He added that while Wickramaratne had played cricket during his school years, the accuracy of the claims could not be verified.

Local media have reported that discussions are ongoing regarding possible administrative changes to Sri Lanka Cricket, including consultations with both local and international cricket authorities.

In March, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated that talks were underway with the International Cricket Council on the matter.
