Govt to introduce mandatory quality inspections for long-distance buses

September 14, 2025

The government has decided to make it compulsory for all long-distance buses to undergo a basic quality inspection before commencing operations.

According to reports, the initiative will come into effect next month under the supervision of the National Transport Commission (NTC), with inspections carried out at Bastion Mawatha and the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center in Colombo.

The requirement will also apply to long-distance excursion buses, with special tours not receiving approval unless they pass the quality inspection.

In particular, inter-provincial buses and those traveling more than 100 km will be required to obtain a fitness certificate 48 hours prior to departure.
