Colombo, Sri Lanka – June 16, 2025 – The high-level Committee of Inquiry investigating allegations of gross abuse of power by suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon will begin daily hearings starting today.
The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice P. P. Surasena and includes Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawela and National Police Commission Chairman E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake.
This phase follows several preliminary sessions and the submission of affidavits by the Attorney General’s Department, paving the way for formal proceedings.
The inquiry stems from serious allegations of misconduct during Tennakoon’s tenure, which led to Parliament passing a resolution under the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act No. 5 of 2002, enabling this independent inquiry process.
Suspended IGP Tennakoon is expected to appear before the committee at 9:30 a.m. today (June 16), continuing a process that began with his initial appearance in May.
The Attorney General’s Department, represented by senior legal officers, has already submitted critical evidence, while Tennakoon’s legal team has also made presentations defending his conduct during the period in question.
The committee is tasked with evaluating whether Tennakoon’s actions amount to a breach of public trust and whether they warrant formal removal from office.
