The Irrigation Department has issued a high-risk flood warning for low-lying areas of the Maha Oya Basin over the next 24 hours.
Officials report that heavy rainfall in the basin’s upper catchment during the past day has significantly increased water levels. As a result, authorities warn that severe flooding—of a magnitude not seen in recent years—may affect the low-lying areas of the Maha Oya valley.
The department has strongly urged residents in vulnerable and downstream communities to move to safer locations immediately and remain alert for further updates.
