Commissioner General of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, Attorney-at-Law Nimal Punchihewa, has emphasized the importance of ensuring 25% female representation in local government elections to promote participatory democracy and good governance.
In a statement, Punchihewa noted that despite women constituting over 50% of the population, their presence in governance remains inadequate. He stressed that increasing female representation would bring fresh perspectives and improve decision-making.
He also highlighted the challenges women face, including derogatory remarks from male counterparts, and called for legal measures to guarantee fair opportunities, as societal structures alone may not provide them.
