IMF Support Is Not a License to Raise Prices – Ravi

September 26, 2025

Receiving assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) does not give the government a license to raise the prices of goods and services, says former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake.

Speaking to the media, he stressed that electricity tariffs should not be increased simply because of conditions set by the IMF.

Karunanayake noted that the IMF’s role is to guide the government by providing a roadmap, not to dictate price hikes.

He further pointed out that during the UNP’s administration, Sri Lanka also worked with the IMF through direct discussions, receiving only the necessary advice while relying on the expertise of local professionals to implement solutions.
