Importers face huge delay charges due to port chaos

January 28, 2026

Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has expressed concern over the ongoing container crisis at the Colombo Port, warning that the situation is worsening day by day.

Speaking to the media, the MP said there are two main reasons behind the escalating crisis. The first is the prolonged delay in releasing containers from the port.

He added that difficulties arising during the transfer of containers from one terminal to another have further aggravated the problem.

Karunanayake also pointed out that a major issue at present is the heavy financial burden placed on importers, who are being forced to bear most of the delay charges caused by the port congestion.
