Increased Pakistani Presence in Northern Provinces Raises Security Concerns

November 10, 2025

The recent rise in the presence of Pakistani nationals in Sri Lanka’s northern provinces has reportedly triggered concern among South Indian security agencies.

The issue intensified after a local private company involved in the controversial Mannar Windmill Project brought in 28 Pakistani workers for project-related activities. The company has informed the local police station that these individuals are engaged in work related to the wind turbine project.

The project recently faced public resistance, with residents protesting over potential environmental impacts.

Following these concerns, the Cabinet decided that no further wind power projects in Mannar will be implemented without the consent of local communities and without adequately addressing environmental issues.

Security-related worries have also been raised, as the Mannar basin has long been identified as a sensitive area frequently exploited as a route for criminal activities, including drug trafficking.
