India has announced the extension of its LKR 300 million financial assistance for another year to support the passenger ferry service operating between Kankesanthurai in northern Sri Lanka and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.
According to a statement from the Indian High Commission in Colombo, the decision underscores India’s ongoing commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and fostering stronger people-to-people ties with Sri Lanka.
The annual gap funding mechanism—first introduced in 2024—is intended to ensure the continued affordability and operational viability of the cross-border ferry service. The funding will cover key logistical and operational expenses, under terms similar to those offered in the previous year.
Since its resumption in August 2024, the ferry service has transported more than 15,000 passengers, significantly contributing to cultural, social, and economic exchanges between the two neighbouring countries. The initiative is viewed as a landmark step in restoring vital maritime links between India and Sri Lanka.
