India national cricket team continued their recent dominance over Pakistan national cricket team with a comprehensive 61-run victory in Colombo, confirming their place in the Super 8s of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
After weeks of uncertainty over whether the match would even go ahead, India proved far too strong, sealing a ninth successive win over their arch-rivals.
Despite the political tensions surrounding the fixture, the match itself passed without incident. There were no handshakes at the toss or exchanges after the final ball, but play on the field remained focused and disciplined.
India’s innings was powered by a brutal early assault from opener Ishan Kishan, who smashed 77 off 40 balls on a turning pitch. His innings gave India early momentum, and despite Pakistan’s spinners slowing the run rate and claiming wickets, India posted a competitive 175 for 7.
That total quickly proved out of reach.
Hardik Pandya struck in the first over of Pakistan’s chase, before Jasprit Bumrah removed two batters in the second, effectively ending the contest early.
Usman Khan offered brief resistance with 44, but Pakistan were bundled out for 114 in 18 overs.
India now advance confidently as they attempt to retain the T20 title they won in 2024. Pakistan, meanwhile, must defeat Namibia on Thursday to secure their own Super 8 berth. Should they qualify, the two rivals could yet meet again later in the tournament in a semi-final or final.
