Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Sri Lanka within this year, as confirmed by the Indian High Commission in Colombo on Tuesday (7th). However, the exact dates for the visit are yet to be finalized.
“We are in the process of working out a propitious timing for the visit,” said Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha during a press briefing.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The invitation for the visit was extended by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during his two-day trip to New Delhi in December 2024. Notably, this was President Dissanayake’s first overseas visit since his election in September 2024, highlighting the importance of Sri Lanka-India relations.
Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar was the first foreign dignitary to visit Colombo shortly after President Dissanayake assumed office.
Prime Minister Modi has previously visited Sri Lanka twice, in 2015 and 2017, fostering strong bilateral ties during his earlier terms.
Upcoming Diplomatic Engagements
President Dissanayake is scheduled to visit China from January 14 to January 17, 2025, marking another significant diplomatic engagement for Sri Lanka.
These high-level visits underscore Sri Lanka’s efforts to strengthen its relationships with major global powers as part of its broader foreign policy strategy.
