Former United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has claimed that Sri Lanka’s inflation, which had declined to negative levels during the administration of Ranil Wickremesinghe, has risen significantly under the current government.
Speaking in an interview with Ceylon Wire, Karunanayake said the government could continue along its current path only until the public begins to feel the impact of the situation.
He said that while Sri Lanka must comply with the conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government must also consider the country’s own interests when implementing those measures.
Karunanayake claimed that the IMF’s approach is primarily focused on providing loans and recovering them, rather than considering the country’s broader interests.
He compared the situation to a medical operation, saying there is no benefit if a patient dies despite the surgery being successfully completed.
