Investors Go Where Profit Is – Ravi Karunanayake

July 15, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, says that foreign investors are drawn to countries where they can maximize their profits—not out of affection or goodwill.

Speaking to the media, the MP emphasized that no investor will choose to operate in Sri Lanka if the tax system is burdensome or unclear. “Investors don’t come here out of love for the country—they come only if it’s profitable,” he stated.

Karunanayake argued that rather than relying on tax concessions, Sri Lanka should focus on creating a stable and competitive economic environment. This includes leveraging local expertise and labor to appeal to potential investors.

“What matters is not how many tax breaks are given, but whether the country provides the right environment for business to grow,” he added.
