Iran Summons UK Ambassador Over IRGC Designation

July 16, 2026

Iran on Wednesday summoned Britain’s ambassador to Tehran after the UK designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under its Countering State Threats Act, warning that the move “will not go unanswered.”

According to a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, carried by Tasnim News Agency, Tehran strongly objected to the UK’s decision and warned of a response.

The move came a day after Britain summoned Iran’s Chargé d’Affaires in London, Ali Nasimfar, over allegations that Tehran had directed proxy groups to carry out attacks across Europe in recent months.

On Monday, the UK designated the IRGC and an affiliated group as security threats under new powers aimed at preventing foreign states from using proxy groups for activities such as surveillance and sabotage.
