Is the Central Bank Interfering with the Government’s Work? – Ravi Karunanayake Questions

July 6, 2025

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, has called for urgent reforms in the banking sector to address issues arising from the Parate Execution Law.

Speaking to the media, the MP emphasized that when banks issue loans, consideration must be given to supporting the development of various segments of society.

Karunanayake noted that during his tenure as Finance Minister, a targeted lending system was introduced, which distributed loans based on social classifications. He highlighted that this approach aimed to ensure more equitable economic growth across different societal groups.

He further raised concerns about the role of the Central Bank, stating that since the government is elected by the people, it would be deeply problematic if the Central Bank were to interfere with its operations.
