Churches across the island solemnly observed a two-minute silence today to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the tragic terror attacks on Easter Sunday, which occurred on April 21, 2019.
The moment of silence, held at 08:45 a.m., served as a poignant tribute to the victims who lost their lives in the devastating bombings. The communications unit of the Archdiocese of Colombo confirmed the observance of this solemn occasion.
On April 21, 2019, Sri Lanka was rocked by a series of coordinated bomb blasts carried out by suicide attackers affiliated with the now-outlawed local Islamic extremist organization, National Thowheed Jamaat (NTJ). The attacks targeted St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade, St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, Zion Church in Batticaloa, as well as prominent hotels including Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury, and Shangri-La in Colombo, along with a guest house in Dehiwala. These heinous acts resulted in the loss of over 260 lives, including foreigners, and left at least 500 individuals injured.
