Japan-Sri Lanka Relations: Discussions to Resume Key Projects

The Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Isomata Akio, announced ongoing discussions with the Sri Lankan government to restart temporarily halted development projects. His remarks came during a meeting with Speaker of Parliament (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne on January 6 at Parliament, where Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera was also present.

Ambassador Isomata conveyed his well wishes to the Speaker and the government, emphasizing Japan’s commitment to further strengthening its long-standing ties with Sri Lanka. He assured Japan’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s development and highlighted plans to expedite the construction of the new terminal at Bandaranaike International Airport.

The Ambassador also commended Sri Lanka’s efforts in combating corruption and fostering national reconciliation.

Speaker Wickramaratne expressed gratitude for Japan’s extensive contributions to Sri Lanka, recalling various Japanese-funded projects that have benefited the nation. He shared his intention to revive the Sri Lanka-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association in the Tenth Parliament to enhance parliamentary collaboration.

The Speaker reiterated Sri Lanka’s dedication to deepening ties with Japan and voiced hope for continued support in achieving mutual development goals.
