The wild elephant popularly known as the “Kandalama” has died after receiving treatment for more than six months near the Kandalama Reservoir.
Wildlife officials estimate the elephant to have been between 25 and 30 years old. It had been in critical condition after being shot in a front leg, believed to be the result of ongoing human–elephant conflict in the area.
The animal had previously survived multiple shooting incidents. About a year ago, it was treated for gunshot injuries and released back into the wild, only to be shot again months later.
The latest injury, however, proved fatal, leading to its death yesterday afternoon (13th).
