The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has announced that a crucial discussion will take place next week to determine the next steps regarding nominations for the Provincial Council elections.
Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne stated that the meeting, chaired by Leader of the House Minister Bimal Rathnayake, will include leaders of political parties represented in Parliament.
He emphasized that the outcomes of this discussion will serve as the foundation for reaching a final agreement on the nominations for the long-delayed Provincial Council elections.
Nominations for these elections were submitted in March 2023. However, the National Election Commission’s plans to conduct the polls were postponed due to insufficient financial allocations from the Treasury.
In recent months, various political and civic factions have called for the annulment of the existing nominations, adding further complexity to the process.
