Khalil Haqqani, the Taliban’s refugee minister, was killed in a suicide bombing inside his ministry in Kabul, making it the highest-profile casualty for the group since it regained control of Afghanistan in 2021. The explosion, which occurred as Haqqani was leaving his office, also claimed the lives of six others, according to sources from the interior ministry.
Haqqani, a senior member of the Haqqani network—a powerful faction within the Taliban—had been designated a global terrorist by the United States. The Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility for the attack. According to IS’s “news agency,” Amaq, an IS militant waited outside Haqqani’s office and detonated explosives as he walked out. A Taliban spokesperson confirmed the attack and attributed it to IS.
