Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India Marxist have decided to extend outside support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam for government formation in Tamil Nadu.
The move follows intense political discussions after TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election but fell short of an outright majority.
Reports indicate that Vijay is expected to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar shortly to stake claim to form the next government.
According to political sources, the Governor had reportedly informed TVK that letters of support from alliance parties would be necessary before an invitation to form the government could be extended.
Following this, TVK sought formal backing from the CPI and CPI(M), with senior party representative CTR Nirmal Kumar personally meeting leaders of both Left parties.
The CPI has already issued a letter of unconditional support, while the CPI(M) is also expected to provide formal backing.
With support from the Indian National Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the TVK-led bloc reportedly reaches the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are also reported to have held discussions with Left party leaders regarding support for TVK.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party state president Nainar Nagendran stated that the BJP would neither attempt to form the government nor support any party seeking to do so.
Veteran politician HV Hande also urged the Governor to invite Vijay to form the government without delay and allow him to prove his majority on the Assembly floor.
