President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the importance of unity and public trust in public service as essential pillars for national progress. He made this call today (22) while officially assuming duties as the Minister of Defence at the Defence Headquarters in Akuregoda.

During his address, the President urged all public officials to align their efforts with a shared goal of transforming the country into a better and more prosperous nation.

Restoring Public Trust and Fulfilling Expectations
President Dissanayake stressed that rebuilding public trust in public service is critical for progress. He noted that the overwhelming mandate of nearly 80% in the recent elections reflects the people’s desire for change and their expectations of good governance. He remarked that while laws and regulations are foundational, the power of the people is equally impactful.

“The government’s sole purpose is to provide political leadership that meets the expectations of the people,” he stated, underscoring his administration’s commitment to serving the public interest.

Engagement with Defence Leadership
Upon arrival, President Dissanayake was warmly welcomed by the staff of the Ministry of Defence. He later held a meeting with the tri-forces commanders and senior Ministry officials, where they discussed ongoing initiatives and future plans for the Ministry of Defence.

The President highlighted the critical role of public officials in driving the nation’s development program and called for their unwavering support in achieving the government’s vision.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, Army Commander Lieutenant General H L V M Liyanage, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, and other members of the security forces and Defence Ministry staff.

President Dissanayake reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to delivering political leadership that aligns with the public’s aspirations and strengthening the public service as a key driver of the nation’s progress.
