Low-Pressure Area Likely to Develop Near Sri Lanka; Heavy Rain Expected

May 10, 2026

The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka says the low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka is likely to develop into a low-pressure area around May 11.

According to the Department, the prevailing showery conditions across the island are expected to continue over the next few days.

Showers or thundershowers are forecast at most places across the country, while generally cloudy skies are expected to prevail.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Uva, North-Western, and Northern provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura district.

The Department has advised the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
