The Department of Meteorology has announced that a low-pressure area is expected to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. According to the latest forecast, the system is likely to intensify further and move west-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, approaching the northern region of Sri Lanka over the subsequent two days.

The general public, particularly those in the Eastern and Northern provinces, are advised to remain vigilant and stay updated with future forecasts and bulletins issued by the department.

Weather Conditions Across the Island

The department also noted that cloudy skies can be expected over most parts of the island today (16). Showers or thundershowers are predicted to occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, North-Central, Uva, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. Showers or thundershowers may also develop in several other areas during the evening or night.

Heavy rainfall of approximately 100 mm is likely in parts of the Northern, Eastern, North-Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Matale district. A few showers are expected over the western coastal areas during the morning.

Additionally, fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, along with the Matale and Trincomalee districts.

Misty conditions are also anticipated in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces during the morning hours.

Precautionary Measures

The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
