The Department of Meteorology reports that a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, located east of Sri Lanka as of this morning (17), is expected to gradually move west-northwestwards toward the Tamil Nadu coast near Sri Lanka’s northern shores within the next 48 hours.
Cloudy skies are likely over most parts of the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, North-Central, Uva, Central, and North-Western provinces.
Some areas in the Northern, Eastern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Matale District, may experience fairly heavy showers exceeding 75mm.
In addition, showers or thundershowers are expected elsewhere in the island during the evening or night.
Fairly strong winds of approximately 40 kmph are anticipated in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces and in the Matale and Trincomalee districts.
The public is advised to take precautions to minimize damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
