Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal to Intensify, Showers Expected in Northern and Eastern Provinces

The Department of Meteorology has reported that the low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further and move west-northwestward over the next 24 hours. It is expected to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, around December 11.

As a result, showery conditions are anticipated to increase in the Northern and Eastern provinces starting December 10. Additionally, the Northeast monsoon is forecasted to gradually establish over the island during this period.

The Met Department predicts several spells of rain in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Showers or thundershowers are also likely in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya, and Kandy districts, particularly during the evening or night.

Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75mm is expected in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Morning misty conditions are also anticipated in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, Western, and North-western provinces.

The general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
