Low-Pressure Area to Enhance Showery Conditions Over Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has announced that a low-pressure area in the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to move west-northwestwards and reach the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, around December 11.

As a result, enhanced rainfall is anticipated in the Northern and Eastern provinces starting December 10. Additionally, the Northeast monsoon is gradually establishing over the island, contributing to the prevailing weather conditions.

Weather Forecast

  • Northern and Eastern Provinces, Matale District: Several spells of showers are expected.
  • Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya, and Kandy Districts: Showers or thundershowers are likely during the evening or night.
  • Fairly Heavy Rainfall: Localized rainfall of approximately 75mm is anticipated in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts.

Additional Conditions
Morning mist is likely in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, Western, and North-western provinces, potentially reducing visibility.

Safety Advisory
The public is urged to take necessary precautions against possible damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
