The Department of Meteorology has warned that a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is currently located about 700 kilometres southeast of Batticaloa and is expected to move closer to Sri Lanka’s eastern coast by tomorrow (08).
According to the Director of the Weather Forecasting Division, Merril Mendis, the system may intensify into a depression within the next few hours, bringing enhanced rainfall and strong winds to several parts of the country.
As a result, showers are forecast for the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces. The general public has been advised to closely monitor weather forecasts and remain vigilant in the coming days.
In addition, fishing and naval activities have been suspended until further notice in the sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee and from Batticaloa to Hambantota due to rough sea conditions.
