Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan; Tremors Felt in Pakistan

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake jolted Afghanistan on Monday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake, recorded at a depth of 10 km in the Hindu Kush region, is susceptible to aftershocks.

Earlier in the day, a separate magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Pakistan at a depth of 170 km, as per NCS reports.

Afghanistan, situated on multiple fault lines, is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, and seasonal flooding. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) warns that frequent quakes exacerbate challenges for communities already struggling with conflict and underdevelopment.

The Hindu Kush region remains a seismically active zone where earthquakes occur regularly, with the Red Cross highlighting Afghanistan’s history of powerful tremors.
