Maha Sangha Conference to Be Held in Colombo to Highlight Concerns Facing Buddhism

February 20, 2026

A Maha Sangha Conference is scheduled to be held today (20) with the aim of educating the public on what organizers describe as growing pressures on Buddhism and the Maha Sangha in Sri Lanka.

The conference will begin at 2.00 p.m. at the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress headquarters in Colombo.

Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero said the Sangha Conference is not being held for political purposes, stressing that its primary objective is to voice objections to pressures allegedly being exerted on Buddhist monks and to raise public awareness on these concerns.

Meanwhile, a signature collection campaign for a public petition urging President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to take action against separatism and separatist forces began yesterday (19) at the Sunethra Devi Pirivena Pepiliyana.

The programme was led by Venerable Medagoda Abayathissa Thero, Venerable Induragare Dhammarathana Thero, and Venerable Malwane Chandarathana Thero.

Members representing over 60 national organisations participated in the event, including Gunadasa Amarasekara and Kalyananda Thiranagama.

Organisers said the completed petition will be handed over to the President in the coming days.
