The Department of Meteorology has warned that hot weather conditions are expected to intensify further next month as the El Niño climate pattern strengthens.
Director General of Meteorology Ajith Wijewickrama said the current El Niño conditions are developing from a weak phase to a moderate level, which is expected to contribute to higher temperatures across the country.
Meanwhile, the Department has issued a heat advisory, stating that the heat index will reach the “Caution” level during daytime hours today in the Eastern Province and the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota and Monaragala.
The Department has urged the public to remain vigilant, stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight where possible, and take necessary precautions to minimise the health impacts of extreme heat.
