The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a US$2.7 million contribution from global fashion brand Michael Kors to strengthen Sri Lanka’s national school feeding programme.
The funding will enable WFP to expand the programme from eight to ten districts, ensuring that 250,000 children receive a nutritious meal each school day over the next three years.
In addition, the initiative will support around 1,500 local farmers and food suppliers by promoting the use of fresh, locally sourced produce.
The contribution will also fund infrastructure improvements, including the installation of solar-powered kitchens in 30 schools, aimed at lowering operational costs, reducing emissions, and advancing sustainability.
“We greatly appreciate Michael Kors’ commitment and partnership in advancing the school feeding programme in Sri Lanka,” said Philip Ward, WFP Country Representative and Director.
“For many families, these meals have become a lifeline, and this is possible thanks to the dedication of the food vendors and farmers who sustain the programme every day,” he added.
