The Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development has announced plans to investigate a significant decline in salt production across the country.
A spokesperson confirmed that salt production companies reported a 40% drop in output over the past two years, attributing the decline primarily to adverse weather conditions.
In light of these alarming figures, the ministry assured the public that immediate steps will be taken to examine the issue and implement measures to address the shortfall. Reports indicate that the decline has already affected local salt availability.
To mitigate the shortage, salt production companies have requested government approval to import salt and have formally communicated their appeal to the ministry.
However, the Ministry of Trade clarified that a final decision on salt imports will be made only after a thorough evaluation of existing salt reserves and an analysis of national consumption demands.
Despite ongoing discussions, the ministry emphasized that no decision has yet been taken regarding the importation of salt.
