Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December to sign a proposed trade agreement, according to The Globe and Mail.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada and India are making progress in trade negotiations and are aiming to reach an agreement by the end of this year. Canada’s Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu also said recently that Ottawa is optimistic about concluding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India by the end of 2026.
Carney said the relationship with India is important not only for trade and economic cooperation, but also for people-to-people ties and security. He said Modi is expected to visit Canada around the time of the G20 summit in December.
The two countries have been working to rebuild diplomatic relations while pursuing closer economic ties. Relations deteriorated following the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India has denied allegations of involvement in the killing.
Canada has also been seeking to diversify its international trade relationships. Recent negotiations with India have focused on areas including energy, nuclear cooperation and critical minerals, alongside broader trade and investment opportunities.
If concluded, the proposed trade agreement would mark a significant development in Canada-India economic relations.
