The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has declared a nationwide Dengue Control Week commencing on June 15 as part of intensified efforts to combat the increasing spread of dengue across Sri Lanka.
Community Physician Specialist Dr. Prasheela Samaraweera of the NDCU stated that the decision was taken in response to the growing number of dengue cases being reported island-wide.
As part of ongoing prevention measures, health authorities recently conducted a special mosquito control programme across the country from June 8 to 10, focusing on the identification and elimination of mosquito breeding sites.
According to Dr. Samaraweera, authorities are also planning an additional mosquito eradication campaign at the local government level to further strengthen dengue prevention efforts and reduce the risk of transmission within communities.
The National Dengue Control Unit emphasized that public participation remains essential to the success of these initiatives.
Health authorities have therefore urged residents to maintain clean surroundings, regularly inspect their properties, and eliminate stagnant water and other potential mosquito breeding sites in homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces.
Officials warn that sustained community action will be crucial in controlling the spread of dengue and preventing a further increase in infections during the coming months.
