The Sri Lanka Navy has launched a special search and rescue operation after three school students were swept away by rough waves while swimming at Galle Face Beach in Colombo yesterday afternoon (10).
According to reports, two of the students have been rescued, while one student remains missing.
Authorities stated that the condition of one of the rescued students is serious and that the individual is currently receiving medical treatment.
The incident occurred when a group of six friends, all reportedly aged around 15 years, visited the beach and entered the sea.
Three of the students were subsequently swept away by strong waves and sea currents.
Following the incident, Sri Lanka Navy divers and rescue teams immediately commenced a search and rescue operation to locate the missing student.
The operation was continuing at the time of reporting.
Authorities have urged the public, particularly young people, to exercise caution when entering the sea during periods of rough weather and strong currents, as prevailing conditions can pose serious risks to swimmers.
Further investigations into the incident are underway.
