NBRO Issues Early Landslide Warnings for Badulla and Monaragala Areas

May 10, 2026

The National Building Research Organisation has issued early landslide warnings for several areas in the Badulla District and Monaragala District due to prevailing adverse weather conditions.

According to the NBRO, the warnings apply to the Passara Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas, as well as the Badalkumbura and Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

The organization warned that mountainous regions, manmade cut slopes, and roads within the affected areas remain at risk of landslides.

Residents have been advised to remain alert for early warning signs such as:

  • Ground cracks and land subsidence
  • Tilting trees and utility poles
  • Cracks in walls and floors
  • Sudden appearance or disappearance of springs
  • Muddy water flows

The NBRO stated that people living in landslide-prone locations should move to safer places immediately if such signs are observed or if heavy rainfall continues.

Both the NBRO and the Disaster Management Centre Sri Lanka have urged the public to strictly follow official safety instructions during the warning period.
