The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) has reported a significant rise in the use of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘Ice’, in Sri Lanka.
Assistant Director of Research at the NDDCB, Thamara Darshana, stated that over 60,000 individuals addicted to ‘Ice’ were arrested during the first ten months of this year alone. Speaking at a media briefing held at the Department of Government Information, Darshana highlighted that drug use is particularly prevalent in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Kandy.
He explained that arrest statistics over recent years show a gradual increase in the use of crystal methamphetamine, while cannabis use has also followed a noticeable trend. However, compared to heroin and cannabis, the increase in ‘Ice’ use is more significant. Darshana also noted that around 99 percent of individuals who use narcotic substances are polydrug users, consuming more than one type of drug concurrently.
Meanwhile, Shantha Gamage, Director of the Treatment and Rehabilitation Division of the NDDCB, pointed out that young people between the ages of 20 and 30 are particularly prone to drug use.
