Sri Lanka Police say nearly 9,000 drivers and passengers have been fined so far for violating seat belt regulations on expressways.
According to the Expressway Police Sri Lanka, inspections are being conducted at all expressway entry and exit points to ensure strict compliance with the law.
Police reiterated that it is now mandatory for both drivers and passengers in all vehicles travelling on expressways to wear seat belts.
Officers deployed on expressway duty have also been instructed to strictly enforce the regulation in the interest of public safety, authorities said.
