The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation has launched a concessionary insurance scheme for key field crops, aimed at strengthening agricultural risk management.
The scheme covers crops including black gram, green gram, cowpea, peanuts, finger millet (kurakkan), sesame, and horse gram (kollu), the Ministry announced.
Under the program, farmers cultivating cowpea can insure one acre for Rs. 4,200 and claim up to Rs. 60,000 per acre as compensation in the event of natural disasters, pest or disease damage, or destruction caused by wild elephants. Similarly, green gram farmers can insure an acre for Rs. 5,600 and be eligible to claim up to Rs. 80,000 per acre in case of damages.
The initiative has been introduced particularly in districts vulnerable to wild elephant threats, providing farmers with vital compensation for losses.
According to the Ministry, the scheme is designed to provide financial protection and stability to the farming community while encouraging sustained agricultural productivity.
