New Draft on Medical Certificates for Driving Licences Sent to Attorney General

February 9, 2026

A new draft containing regulations for obtaining medical certificates required for issuing driving licences has been submitted to the Attorney General’s Department Sri Lanka.

Chairman of the National Transport Medical Institute, Clifford Perera, said the draft clearly outlines specific medical examination standards that must be followed when issuing these certificates.

He explained that a comprehensive set of medical criteria will be considered, including vision, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol levels.

Once approval is received from the Attorney General, the draft—containing clearly defined examination standards—will be gazetted.

Although regulations related to driving licence issuance already exist, Professor Perera noted that this is the first time a consolidated draft has been prepared covering all regulations specifically applicable to medical certificates required for driving licences.
