New Program for Port City Development Underway – Harshana Responds to Ravi’s Concerns

Deputy Minister Harshana Suriyapperuma has announced that a new program is currently being implemented for the development of the Colombo Port City, with a focus on strengthening the necessary legal framework and resolving existing issues.

Speaking in Parliament, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the government is actively working to attract foreign investment through the Port City initiative. He stated that major investor-focused activities will commence following the passage of key ordinances supporting the project.

Suriyapperuma made these remarks in response to a side question raised by MP Ravi Karunanayake, who drew attention to the proposed Maldives International Financial Center. Karunanayake highlighted the center’s ambition to rival financial hubs like Dubai and Singapore and questioned whether the Sri Lankan government was prepared to compete with such emerging regional players.

In reply, Suriyapperuma assured that the government is aware of the regional developments and is taking proactive steps to position Sri Lanka as a competitive financial and investment destination through the Port City project.
