Attention is centered on the potential appointment of Member of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramarathne as the new Speaker of Parliament.
Dr. Wickramaratne, who contested the Polonnaruwa district under the NPP in the last general election, was elected to Parliament.
Following the resignation of former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala, the position of Speaker remains vacant.
It has been reported that the appointment of a new Speaker is scheduled to take place during tomorrow’s parliamentary session.
Previously, the names of Deputy Speaker Rizvi Salih, Nihal Galappatti, and Lakshman Nipunarachchi were suggested for the role of Speaker.
Meanwhile, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party has indicated its readiness to propose a candidate from its side for the position.
