NMRA to Launch Islandwide Probe on Pharmacy Pricing Compliance

November 12, 2025

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has announced an islandwide investigation to determine whether pharmacies are selling medicines at the government-fixed maximum retail prices.

NMRA Chairman Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama stated that maximum retail prices have now been established for nearly 500 varieties of medicines, following the approval of a new pricing formula in Parliament.

He noted that the revised formula has already resulted in significant price reductions for several medicines. The upcoming investigation will assess whether consumers are receiving the full benefit of these reductions.

Dr. Wijewickrama further emphasized that legal action will be taken against pharmacies found to be charging above the approved prices.
